This publication shows Heinz Grill’s step-by-step process of forming the King Cobra. The words and interpretations are by David Scherwey and Barbara Holzer.
The beautiful backward bend, pūrṇa-bhujaṅgāsana (bhujaṅgāsana = cobra, pūrṇa = whole), arises from the mental picturing and thus from the sixth centre. The body forms a circle, the feet touch the back of the head. The ascending spirial sketch supports a mental picturing of the movement dynamics. With the demonstrated preparatory exercise, of rising up and then pulling the arms backwards, the curving is intensified. The use of force from the lower area of the back upwards into the vertical is clearly visible in these phases. The practitioner also curves the chest in the upper areas. The king cobra ultimately forms out of the curve.
